Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?
My first job in high school was working as a Newspaper Reporter and I continued to write both professionally and academically in the years since I was an English major in college and graduate school. But, I didn't start writing full-time until three years ago, when I left my Advertising Career for a future in journalism. I have always wanted to be a Travel Writer but wasn't sure if it would ever happen for me. I wasn't actually positive about how can one become a Travel Writer in the first place, as I found the industry difficult to break into initially. My two great passions have always been writing and traveling, so I'm thrilled to be working in a profession where I get to combine both into one.
Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.
I am a New York-based Freelance Writer covering Travel, Lifestyle & Culture. My work has appeared in multiple famous Magazines. I am a travel contributor for on, whe of the leading magazine where I write about culture, nature and adventure.
As a Caribbean Expert for One of the Top Travel Website of US, I cover the Islands and Nations of that (idyllic) part of the world. I also continue to contribute to a leading Media Group via a monthly Travel Feature that runs in all 17 weekly newspapers, as well as online.
I love to travel because I love meeting new people and experiencing different cultures. And I blame my parents on for my insatiable wanderlust - they took me to the Arctic Circle when I was only 14-months-old. Since then, I’ve traveled to 6 continents, 63 countries, and all 50 states, and studied abroad in London and Osaka. I have been interviewed about my travels throughout Africa, Europe, and the Caribbean for publications, podcasts, and radio shows.
My writing has been translated into French and Arabic and I’ve been profiled many leading Newspapers about my reporting on the Barbary Coast.
Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?
In the beginning, finding outlets for my articles was a challenge. But you have to keep pitching and pitching and pitching. And don't limit yourself to subject material or topics. If you're looking to make it as a freelance writer, you have to be comfortable with rejection.
Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?
To be honest, the beginning was the most difficult when I had fewer assignments and was being paid very little, though now it's challenging as well to keep on top of my deadlines and make sure I'm constantly advancing my career to the next level. As an entrepreneur, you're responsible for your own success.
Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?
Once you begin to get more assignments and if you're given the opportunity to travel, I say throw yourself into it full-force to make as many contacts as you can and learn as much as possible in these windows of opportunities. I certainly burned the candle at both ends.
Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?
Future plans in the immediate term are to write some stories I've been needing to finish up from past trips. Then, I want to look into a book deal, and consulting work potentially in the travel industry.
Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?
Be kind to every contact you meet. Make sure your website is up to date as it's your top calling card and should be as professional and engaging as possible. And don't give up!
