Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to select this profession?

I come from a family of doctors and I was inspired by my parents (both doctors) to develop an interest in the medical field at a young age. I completed my MBBS from a well-known Medical College in Sion and residency in General Surgery at many leading hospitals. Eventually, I pursued a super-speciality in Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery at a renowned college. I was keen to bring to India the medical treatments that were on par with the best in the world. With this determination, I took up a fellowship in Advanced Cosmetic and Aesthetic Surgery and Laser Training at Singapore. I set up my practice under the brand 'CPLSS' (Cosmetic Plastic Surgery & Laser Super-Specialities) in the year 2006.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your services.

As a Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeon, I perform surgeries and treatments that change the way my patients look and feel about themselves. I divide my work into three areas:

  • Cosmetic surgery, which involves liposuction (fat reduction), breast implants, anti-ageing surgery, and body sculpting surgery
  • DHI hair transplants, which are performed through specially-developed and patented instruments and which provide fully-natural looking results.
  • Anti-ageing cosmetic treatments, which are walk-in walk-out procedures which are highly desired by my patients.

I am an Advanced Trainer for a Global Pharmaceutical Company in India and am frequently invited as a faculty by Global scientific bodies to conduct workshops for Doctors and Medical Professional from across the world.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting?

The three main challenges that I faced at the time of starting my independent practice were:
  • Creating professional goodwill. It helps to grow your practice if you are visible within your ecosystem: fellow doctors, hospitals and patients. Creating goodwill takes times, often years, of hard work.
  • Managing cash flow. Starting a plastic surgery practice can be capital-intensive. Fortunately, off late I see many banks offering soft loans to doctors to finance their asset acquisitions.
  • Building a good team. Today, I am blessed to have a highly-qualified team and competent employees. But it is difficult to get the right professionals to join you when you are just starting up.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

The challenge that I faced at the initial stage of my career was to create a credible standing in the community. To overcome this challenge, I took it upon myself to ensure that I provide the best quality of services and medical care and that I keep myself updated with all the latest happenings in the field of my work. I remember that I attended practically all medical conferences in my field in the initial few years of my practice. These gave me a chance to interact with leading doctors from India and abroad and to discuss various emerging concepts in medical science with them. I absorbed, analysed, and disseminated information in an easy-to-understand format to my patients during their consultations and also during medical seminars. All of these initiatives help me to create a standing for myself and to gain appreciation and acknowledgement from those around me.

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

As a result of my efforts, I could observe myself getting known in the medical community. I was regularly invited to attend conferences to talk about emerging issues in medicine. My patients continued their association with my clinic for a number of years; in fact, for the first few years of my practice, I had a 100% patient retention rate. I also started receiving enquiries from Celebrity Clients who had heard about the quality of care that I had provided to my patients and the results that I delivered to them. This base grew with the passage of time and as I reminisce about those days, I feel a sense of accomplishment and professional pride.

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

The next five years are exciting for me professionally. I see my practice expanding beyond the cities in which we operate today. Over the last 5 to 7 years, I have been involved in designing standard operating procedures (SOPs) for my practice, with the conscious intention to scale my practice without diluting the high-quality care and the excellence of results that we are known for. On the agenda is the development of a robust franchise system and some international collaborations for bringing the best in Aesthetic medical treatments from across the world in India.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

I think that entrepreneurs who are starting out need to have a very strong knowledge of their domain. There is no success possible unless you understand what you do and are very good at doing it. The next important thing is to understand the practical aspects of running a business. This means that you have to be good at managing cash flows, negotiating with suppliers, dealing with your employees, and being able to have control of the business processes overall. I strongly believe that if you are someone who knows what is to be done and how to do it then you have a very good chance of being successful at what you do.
