Q1. How did your career journey start? Or Who/What inspired you to start this business/ entrepreneurship?

From my later school days, the time when everyone my age was planning to take up Computer programming or Chartered Accountancy, I was fascinated by the thought of turning my hobby in to a full time profession. After completing my Standard XII examinations, I took up a job as a customer service executive for a British telephone company since I needed to financially support my family. I would say I did pretty well but my heart and dreams were fixed on becoming a fulltime showman. I was lucky enough to have managers who were kind enough to grant me leave and the occasional half-day whenever a performance came up. Still, it was difficult to cope up with both careers at the same time.

I could feel my performance quality dropping. After 6 months on the job, it seemed the
end client and the call centre started having some disagreements and overnight, the client shifted the process over to another call centre. A few of the newer employees including myself were asked to leave the process. This turned out to be the Catalyst to start my full time performing career and within a month, eighteen year old Amazing David had landed a contract performing in schools for one of India’s leading Newspapers.

Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.

I am an Illusionist. I perform for corporate and private events all over the world. My show is interactive and crosses the threshold between the audience and performer and blurs the line between what we understand and what is unreal. Magic is an intellectually stimulating art form and my performances not only entertain but also leave the audiences thinking. I also design special illusion presentations for clients to launch products or concepts and also bring out corporate messages. I am also working on a new show termed ‘Psychillusions’ that combines human psychology with magic and illusions.

Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?

People are programmed to believe that you cannot be a professional entertainer in India. There is “no-scope”. In fact words of discouragement still flow in till this day. As a country, India is yet to understand the value of this form of entertainment. A magician is often thought of as a man in a glittery ill fitting coat and hat pulling out paper flowers from a tin can at a children birthday party. Or people think it is a form of the dark arts, Black magic to be precise.

The biggest challenge was to show people the true potential of a good Illusionist... And i think i am doing that... one show at a time.

Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?

They say in “ Show Business “ , Business is the bigger word ! Balancing Show and business has always been the difficult part. I am still learning !!

Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?

What I do is Creatively Stimulating. I am always on the look out for new ways to enthral my audience. I keep experimenting with new effects, humour and presentations. I am working on new shows and ideas all the time and I love doing that. I don’t think my “experiment period” will ever end !

Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?

I am working towards a modern theatrical magic production and hope to launch it in the next few years and tour the world with it. Also I hope to have a television series on the art. On a more personal front, I would like to do something to uplift traditional Indian street magicians and performers. India has a rich heritage of street performers who no one knows about and hence their tribes are dying out.

Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?

It takes courage to take the first plunge, but once you do that, you will learn to fly. Believing in yourself and your efforts is the key. .

And also my advice to everyone, not just budding entrepreneurs is a quote from Roald Dhal..

“ Always believe in a little magic.. Magic is believing in Yourself and if you can do that you can make anything happen. Don’t wait for that magic moment. Go out and make your own magic. For those who don’t believe in magic... shall never find it..”
