Subsequent to quitting the Indian Navy after 23 long years as a Commander in 2012, I began pursuing my passion for Corporate training along with my role as a Business Head. My workshops have always been full of fun. It all started way back in 2014 when one of my close friends suggested that I should try a hand at Stand up Comedy, since he knew me very well.
Q2. Kindly share some information about your Business, products and services here.
By the day, I am a Corporate trainer & Motivational Speaker who has handled a lot of workshops on Behavioural, Leadership & Soft Skills. At night, I am a host & Stand up Comic who has done 100s of shows till now in the last 3 years in different venues & cities of India.
Q3. What kind of challenges did you face while starting/doing business?
If you notice, most of the comics in India are almost half my age. Starting at 47 was by no means easy and it took some time for the fellow performers & audience to accept me as a Stand up artist. Furthermore, the investment of time in the beginning was high i.e. when you perform in Open Mics. Also, one does not get paid for the Open Mics. It takes a while before one starts making some money.
Q4. Do share with our readers about your discovery period when you were facing difficulties in your business?
The first few months were not easy as I would leave home at 6 pm and return past 12 after a very bad 3-4 minutes on stage. I would come home and ask myself as to why I was even doing this. But the passion and perseverance drove me the very next day with a resolve to do well. Slowly, I started doing well and the rest is history.
Q5. Share with our readers about your experiment period after the discovery period?
Once you start getting the applause, you get the opportunity to try new material, which is essential to build up your stage time. Every venue & city has a different kind of audience and one flirts with certain kind of content everywhere. No risk, no gain.
Q6. What are your future plans? Or now what is your vision for next five years?
Although I love to train people, I would like to continue travelling for Stand up Comedy to different parts of the country and hopefully, world. I will also be working on building my content so that I have a longer set on stage. At the moment, I am just enjoying my time on stage and would let it flow wherever it goes in this line of work. I have already spoken at 3 TEDx conclaves and hope to be a TED speaker someday. I would also like to grow as a Motivational Speaker as that comes naturally to me.
Q7. How would you advice/suggest new entrepreneurs who want to start & sustain in business?
You have to have a funny bone to be a Stand up Comic. And if you do want to pursue this as a full time profession, one needs to be very patient and never say die. Keep going to Open Mics and trying/ testing new material and at some stage, you will begin to leave an impression. Also, one needs to have an original style and his own content to be able to do well.
